(for current news and events, please visit our Facebook page)

Sadly, the season started with the folIowing message being posted

on the website and Facebook page:

IMPORTANT: Saturday 15th April 2023

Due to the amount of rain over the past week it has been decided that the greens

are too soft for play. Therefore the traditional Men's "Captain v Vice-captain" match

today and the Association Drive tomorrow have both been cancelled.

Club morning on Monday 17th will go ahead so please make sure you

arrive before 10am to be included in the mornings proceedings!

Not the start we wanted but the weather did improve from Monday 17th and

Club morning was well attended by both clubs.

There were also two matches played during the week with a Mixed Friendly

against Ardagh on Tuesday 18th and Portishead Ladies played a Friendly

against Portishead RBL (The Poppies) on Thursday 20th.

Sadly, neither match went our way but it was a good way to blow away the

cobwebs and enjoy the great outdoors again!

Sunday 30th April:

Well done to those intrepid, prospective bowlers who visited us for our first Open Day

of the season. It was a little misty and damp but everyone did really well and we look

forward to seeing you all at Club Morning.

We have another Open Day on Sunday 28th May if you missed out this time!

Many thanks to our coaches and all members who came along and

made the day such a success.

Sunday 28th May:

Such a change from the last one with perfect weather for our 2nd Open Day!

Today we welcomed an amazing number of people trying out bowls on our wonderful

greens and learning all about the club. All age groups were represented and we managed

to get everybody bowling pretty well in no time!

Everybody said how much they enjoyed the experience with us and we look forward

to seeing them again soon at one of our Club mornings.

Many thanks to all the members and coaches that put in such a huge effort during the day!

Monday 5th June:

Well done to all the members of both clubs who participated in our fun Charity event this morning.

Our lucky dip games, splendid raffle and hot dogs raised an amazing £441.14, to be split between this year’s charities Clevedon and District Foodbank & Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.

Well done to George Norris for winning the ’spider’ and to Chris Sheppard as

overall winner with the best shot score of an amazing 30!

Thanks to Jenny B and her helpers for organising the games and the raffle, to Marilyn and her helpers for the fabulous hot dogs and to the men for the putting out the equipment

and manning the bar.

Tuesday 18th July:

Portishead Ladies & Portishead RBL Ladies held their annual Ladies Open Triples Day,

and what a fantastic event it was! The weather behaved itself and the standard of

bowling was very impressive.

After 4 rounds of 7 ends, 4 teams had won all their games so positions were decided

on shot difference and many congratulations go to the winners:

1st place - Redland Green with 8 points and +19 shot difference

2nd place - Long Ashton - 8 points and +18

3rd place - West Backwell - 8 points and +16

4th place - Olveston - 8 points and +10

Thank you to everyone who came to take part and all the volunteers from Portishead Ladies

& the Poppies for an outstanding day’s effort in making the day run smoothly.

Monday 31st July:

What a chaotic start to our Charity morning!

The overnight rain scuppered play at 10.30am however we did manage the Spider, which

was won by Richard Brake, and a 'lucky dip' game of 8 ends.

Congratulations to Rod Hawkins for winning with an impressive 20 points and to

Tony Benford for winning the wooden spoon.

Many thanks to Sue Tassell and her helpers for the excellent ploughman’s lunch with

a fine choice of desserts, and to all those who helped to make a lovely morning.

Your efforts do not go unnoticed!

All profits will be divided between the Ladies and Men’s charities:

Clevedon and District Foodbank CIO and

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC)

Sunday 7th August:

Topsy turvy weather for our Mixed Pairs competition today with heavy downpours

and bright sunshine!

We played 3 x 1 hour games with 2 points for a win & 1 point for a draw and, as is

often the case, a number of pairs had 6 points and the results were decided on shot difference.

Many congratulations to the winners Dave Girling & Julie Sheppard and the runners up,

Niall Morrissey & Lin Cobb. A mention also for Dennis Poulston & Myra Ringrose,

who came in a close third by 1 shot!.

Many thanks to Jenny Brown for organising and keeping all the scores and

Jenny White for all the teas and coffees.

Friday 11th August:

The Association BBQ today was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all those who

came along on a lovely summer evening. The burgers, sausages and chicken were amazing,

the salad display was spectacular and the desserts were delicious.

However, none of this would have been possible without the tremendous amount of work

put in by Sue Tassell and her band of volunteers. Sue, Marilyn W, Jenny B, Kate S and Sue D

did hours of prep and cooking in the kitchen, we had Pat on the Burger BBQ and

Rod, Julia, Paul, Peter S, Duncan C & Roy doing shifts on the bar.

Thank you all it was a real treat!

Thursday 17th August:

Portishead Men hosted their annual Captain & President’s Day today, attended by the

membership and the Captains & Presidents of all 4 Clubs in the Association.

Play started with the Spider, which was won by Stewart Calderwood. This was followed by

3 games of 6 ends (actually 2 of 6 ends and 1 of 4 ends, due to time constraints) and guess

who won?.......... Stewart Calderwood! Well done, Stewart!

A lovely 2 course meal with wine followed and there were speeches, jokes and banter.

A fabulous event so thanks to everyone who attended, those who helped set up, Sandra

for the amazing flowers and table decorations and our lovely ladies Julia & Diane for

manning the bar and serving the wine.

Monday 28th August:

Today was our main Finals Day of the weekend with most trophies being decided.

The full list of winners and runners-up will be available after the Presentation Evening in November.

Well done to all those that entered and played in some close fought, lively and friendly

matches. The standard of bowls on view was impressive.

Many thanks to all the markers, Jenny Brown & Neil Dale for putting the schedule together

and again, to Jenny for organising a brilliant day.

All the winners have been updated in the respective ‘Club Competitions’ sections on the

Information page and some photos of the day are available in the Gallery.

Saturday 2nd September:

A perfect morning for Portishead Ladies playing the Friendship Cup with the

Poppies (Portishead Royal British Legion Ladies Bowling Club).

A Portishead Lady teamed with a Poppy playing 3 rounds of 8 ends in this annual Pairs

competition. Great fun, some great bowls and so lovely to be able to get together

in a friendly competition.

Huge congratulations to Maggie Wilks (Portishead) & Joy Kelly (Poppies) on a fabulous

win by being the only team that won all 3 of their games

Dee Dee Johnson (Portishead) & Chris Roberts (Poppies) had the most shots of the 2nd placers

to take away the Runners Up bowl

Many thanks to Jenny B (Portishead) and Marg (Poppies) for organising the event and

all those who provided our fabulous lunch and manned the tea/coffee & bar

Wednesday 6th September:

A cracking afternoon of bowls today!

The annual Portishead Men v Portishead Ladies match was a resounding success

with the friendliest of results.

After 18 ends, 2 rinks were won by the Men, 2 rinks to the Ladies and a draw on the 5th rink.

Total shots 77 each!

Well done to everyone on a fabulous afternoon of excellent bowls, with special mentions

to ‘Honorary Lady’ Bob (Roberta) Swift, Margaret Hurst & Anne Bridgen for the

tea & biscuits and Mark Stiddard on the bar.

Thursday 7th September:

The Ladies were blessed with beautiful sunny weather for their Captain & President’s Day

today. The pavilion looked amazing, the flowers were fabulous and their members and

guests brilliant!

As always there was a ‘Spider’ followed by a few rounds of bowls with randomly picked teams.

Winner of the 'Spider' was Steve Secker, Captain of Portishead Royal British Legion Bowling Club and winner of the overall points prize was Hazel Aspinall, so congratulations to them!

There then followed a delicious two course meal with wine, presentations and speeches by

the Ladies President, Sandra Daisley and Captain, Liz Parker.

Many thanks go to everyone involved in organising the event and to Frank & Rod for manning

the bar and serving the wine.

It was a truly wonderful afternoon, well done everyone!

Wednesday 20th September:

Well, the season ended much as it started, with the following email being sent to all members:

Good afternoon, everybody.

Please note that the greens will be closed for the rest of the season. This includes the

Association Drive on Sunday.

However, on the plus side the bar will be open on Friday lunchtime.

Ah well............

Friday 17th November:

This evening we welcomed many members, old and new, to our Annual Dinner and Presentation,

held at Nailsea Masonic Hall.

It was a fabulous get together with everyone enjoying a delicious 3 course dinner, followed by the presentation of the Trophies and Awards.
